Home computer will we connected to ISP by using modem or by using local dial up number. Where as in office, all computers will be interconnected through Local Area Network (LAN) which still connect to the Internet using an ISP that your company has contracted with.
The large communications companies have their own dedicated backbones connecting various areas. In each area, the company has a Point of Presence (POP). The POP is a place for local users to access the company's network, often through a local phone number or dedicated line. There is no overall controlling network. Instead, there are several high-level networks connecting to each other through Network Access Points (NAP).
INTERNET ROUTER'S FUNCTION
The router will determine where to send the information from one computer to another, i.e., from one place to another. Routers are a typical computers that sends the information to the required place through numerous paths. The main job of the router is that it will ensure that the information is sent to correct destination.
INTERNET PROTOCOL [IP ADDRESS]
Each and every computer which is registered on the internet will have unique identity number which is known as IP address. For human reference, the IP address will be in decimal numbers. But computers will use IP address to communicate with other computers over internet in binary format.
IP to DOMAIN NAME SYSTEM [DNS]
The domain name system will maps text words to IP address. So you dont need to remember a very long IP address. For example, you can simply remember "www.internet-portal.blogspot.com" instead of its IP address.
